Abstract: In this lecture, we will review the classical Hasse principle for quadratic forms, talk about
the failure of the principle for general Diophantine equations, and introduce the concept of
Tate-Shafarevich groups. We will also mention its relation with the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture.
