abstract: We will discuss some recent results relating normal
surfaces to angle structures on 3-manifolds. Some of the works of
Kang-Rubinstein, Casson, Jaco, Tollefson, Tillmann and Thurston on
normal surface and spun normal surface will be revisited from a
different point of view. This talk is partially based on a joint work
with S. Tillmann.
