 The study of arcs and blocking sets in affine and projective spaces 
  
 over finite fields has received a lot of attention in the past - due 
  
 to the geometric significance of these objects and important 
  
 links with coding theory. Here we consider similar questions for 
  
 coordinate geometries over finite chain rings (\"Hjelmslev geometry\") 
  
 and finite matrix rings (\"geometry of matrices\"). Applications to 
  
 codes and random matrices over finite fields will also be discussed.
