Character theory provides a powerful tool for proving theorems about finite groups. In this talk, I will give a brief int roduction to character theory. Firstly, I will introduce some basic notations and results. Then I'll show the applicatio n of character theory in research of finite groups by example. At last, I'll introduce an active research trend in chara cter theory by giving the classification of nonsolvable D2-groups.
