I'll discuss recent work with M. Eichmair and V. Moraru where we prove that a complete 3-manifold with non-negative scalar curvature that admits an absolutely area minimizing cylinder must be flat. This (essentially) completes the classification of area minimizing surfaces in the presence of non-negative scalar curvature.
