Frobenius\' one of major achievements is the complete
determination of all irreducible characters of the symmetric
group. Schur\'s generalization to the double covering
groups laid the foundation for the future work of Macdonald
and recently our generalization to
boson-fermion correspondence and
affine Lie algebras. We will
discuss some recent developments among generalized symmetric
groups, vertex operatos and symmetric functions.
